Citibank Visa Cash card program introduction:

This Citibank cash card is shown with a Visa Cash reader and is a first generation Citibank ATM card with a chip that later evolved into Citibank's Visa Cash Card program. It is a great image as it also shows how a consumer would use the Visa Cash Card reader. This card has been cataloged by Visa Cash.org as CTY (1) as it is a pre-Visa Cash card first issued about November 1997. Citibank subsequently agreed to participate in the Visa Cash program and below are all the cards issued. Citibank had two series of card designs for their Visa Cash program, the first the "Money Card" series that was the same design on the front with each expiring one month after the other. At the same time the Musician's series was issued with an odd set of expiration dates. More on that below. The last card issued in the program was the Visa Stars card and it was a single issue. The Visa Cash cards were all issued to test the Visa Cash concept in New York City on Manhattan's upper west side. Citibank was conducting these test to compete with Chase Manhattan Bank who was testing Mondex cards at the same period of time. So on this page you will see both Citibank and Chase cards series working with rival programs: CitiBank working with Visa (of course) to test the Visa cash card concept and Chase working with to test Mondex it's very similar cash card concept. Mondex was later purchased by MasterCard as MasterCard's in-house program was at the time way behind its rival Visa. Both banks competitive research on cash cards eventually benefited from the research of both.

The Citibank Visa Cash program:

Citibank issued two series of cards, the first called the Money Card Series and the second called the Musician's Series. There as once last card issued for the program called the the Visa Stars cash card. All cards were reloadable and none were disposable....
